P0776: Pressure Control Solenoid ‘B’ Performance or Stuck Off DTC Trouble Code

In order to shift gears, the ECU has to control the fluid pressure inside the transmission, using small plunger devices called pressure control solenoids. If a mechanical fault has been detected with the solenoid using the ‘B’ designation, a P0776 diagnostic trouble code will be stored.

Since the ECU relies on pressure control solenoids to control shifting, a P0776 DTC means you will likely experience problems ranging from slipping to engine stalling.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0776 include:

  • Check engine light
  • Harsh, delayed or erratic shifts
  • Slipping in-and-out of gear
  • Engine stalls
  • Getting stuck in gear
  • Vehicle won’t move when in gear
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Transmission overheats
  • Limp mode

  • Frayed wiring / damaged connectors
  • Failed pressure control solenoid
  • Failed transmission pump

How to Diagnose the Code?

Often, failing to have a transmission serviced on time can lead to problems with the pressure control solenoids, because of the dirty transmission fluid. To see if this is the case, your mechanic should first check the level and condition of the transmission fluid. If metal shavings are visible in the fluid, a rebuilt or remanufactured transmission may be required. If the transmission fluid doesn’t appear burned, then flushing the transmission could clear blocked internal passages.

If no problems are found with the ATF, then the wiring and connectors should be inspected for signs of damage, corrosion and possible short circuits. If everything appears to be in good condition, then the pressure control solenoid will have to be tested according to the manufacturer’s recommended procedure. If no problems are found with the solenoid, then the torque convertor, transmission pump, valve body or pressure regulator could be suspected.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing

It’s not uncommon for many mechanics to blame the transmission pump for this DTC, when it could actually be a wiring problem, or a faulty pressure control solenoid.
