If your vehicle has a manual shifting function on it’s automatic transmission, then you will be able to manually control the gear changes by placing the shift lever into a special gate next to the PRNDL labels. However if there is a problem with the electrical circuit that allows this to take place, a P0950 DTC will be saved.
How Serious is the Code?
Having a the P0950 diagnostic trouble code is not going to significantly impact the drivability of the vehicle, or cause any internal damage. However, you probably won’t be able to manually shift the transmission.
Symptoms of a P0950 include:
- Manual shifting function is disabled
- Damaged wiring or connectors
- Transmission shift switch failure
How to Diagnose the Code?
A P0950 OBDII trouble code is often caused by damaged wiring or corroded connectors, due to liquids being spilled around the transmission shifter. So all of the wiring and connectors around the shift mechanism should be checked for signs of damage and corrosion. The transmission shift switch itself should also be checked.
