TSB TC002-97 – P or N to Reverse engagement – A340E / A340F transmission

Problem – Drivers may experience a pronounced delay in the engagement of Reverse gear from the Park or Neutral position.
Solution – A revised B3 brake return Spring, B3 piston rings and low coast modulators spring will have to be installed.

Problem – Some vehicles may experience a chatter noise when shifted out of Reverse into either Park or Neutral.
Solution – A revised A340 valve body design has been created with an additional check ball to prevent this problem.

Common A340E Transmission Problems

Erratic Shifting / Loss of Forward Gears: If you’re experiencing A340E transmission problems like slipping, erratic shifting, or failed gear engagement, the causes could range from a failed A340E solenoid / A340E-HD solenoid, to a A340E torque convertor issue.

Another common problem is overheating. This happens when the moving parts inside the transmission are creating more friction heat than the ATF can remove. The most common cause of this condition is towing heavy loads, driving in stop/go traffic, or on mountain roads where the transmission has to shift a lot.

Loss of 4th Gear and/or Reverse: Another common problem is an inoperable fourth or reverse gear. These issues are often caused by design flaws in the Reverse Boost Valve, channel plate, and stripped splines on the 4th gear clutch hub shaft.

I have a 99 Tacoma that has 348. 000 miles on it. The only problem I’m having. For what ever reason the tail shaft has slack in it. Therefore everyone I put it in gear it makes a loud clank. Is there a bushing or bearing or both I can replace to cure that problem. Thanks. Please help
