P0895: Shift Time Too Short OBD-II Trouble Code

When you’re driving down the road, the ECU is constantly monitoring the shift quality of the transmission through a number of sensors, including the input speed sensor and output speed sensor. If the data coming back to the engine control unit indicates that the timing between shifts is too short, the P0895 DTC will be saved.

How Serious is the Code?

The P0895 diagnostic trouble code cause by the failure of a number of components, including the electronic pressure control/solenoids, the electronic pressure/EP sensor, a damaged wire, connectors or even the transmission pump. It takes a lot of transmission parts to maintain the hydraulic pressure needed to change gears. The sensors that monitors that system can also affect the shift quality. So this OBD2 code is very serious, and can potentially result in drivability issues and a high repair bill.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0895 include:

  • Erratic transmission behavior
  • Delayed or unusually harsh shifts
  • High pitched noise coming from the transmission

Causes

  • Failed transmission pump
  • Mechanical failure
  • Damaged wiring or connectors
  • Failed EPC solenoid
  • Failed EP sensor
  • Failed ECU or programming issue

How to Diagnose the Code?

The first step to diagnosing a P0895 OBDII trouble code, is to check the transmission fluid for an unusually dark-color, burnt smell and metallic fragments (this can indicate an internal mechanical failure). If any of these are found, then an in-depth mechanical diagnosis will be needed. If not, the wiring and connectors along the transmission wiring harness, and related sensors will need to be tested. The transmission pan may also need to be removed in order to test the solenoids. In addition, the manufacturer’s technical service bulletin/TSB database should be checked to see if there are any known solutions and software updates that could fix this issue.
