In order to shift an automatic transmission like a manual, a switch connected to the gear lever has to send an electrical signal to the TCM every time you push the shifter in the +/- direction. This tells a sensor on the valve body which gear you would like to engage. If there is an issue with one of the components in the auto shift manual mode circuit, a P0955 DTC will be saved.
How Serious is the Code?
The transmission problems related to a P0955 diagnostic trouble code are not likely to leave you stranded on the side of the road. They will however, prevent you from using the manual shifting function.
Symptoms of a P0955 include:
- Manual shifting function disabled
- Damaged wiring or connectors
- Failed Autostick transmission shift switch
How to Diagnose the Code?
In order to diagnose a P0955 OBDII trouble code, your mechanic will need to check the shifter mechanism for signs of moisture damage, due to a possible spill around the gear lever. The autostick shift switch should be tested to ensure that it works, and the wiring/connectors should be checked for signs of damage and corrosion.

- Repair or replace damaged wiring and connectors
- Replace Autostick transmission shift switch
