P2762: Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Ctrl Circuit Range/Performance OBD-II Trouble Code

The torque converter clutch pressure control solenoid is designed to deliver the hydraulic pressure that the ECU needs to operate the torque converter clutch. If it’s not performing according to the preset perimeters, a P2762 DTC will be set.

How Serious is the Code?

A P2762 diagnostic trouble code is one of the more serious OBD2 trouble codes, as it relates to the one transmission part that controls the hydraulic pressure needed to make the torque converter function properly. If the torque converter clutch cannot disengage when it’s told to by the ECU, the engine and transmission will still be locked together in a direct drive when you go to slow down, which can cause the engine to stall. If the torque converter clutch cannot engage when it’s told to, a number of transmission problems can occur like slipping and transmission overheating.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P2762 include:

  • Harsh, delayed or erratic shifts
  • Slipping in-and-out of gear
  • Engine stalls
  • Getting stuck in gear
  • Vehicle won’t move when in gear
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Transmission overheats
  • Limp mode

Causes

  • Low transmission fluid level
  • Dirty transmission fluid / filter
  • Damaged wiring/connector
  • Transmission fluid leak
  • Faulty torque converter clutch pressure control solenoid
  • Faulty torque converter clutch
  • Faulty torque converter
  • Internal pressure issue
  • Valve body issue
  • ECU or TCM failure

How to Diagnose the Code?

Dirty or low transmission fluid can prevent the torque converter clutch pressure control solenoid from having enough hydraulic pressure to activate the clutch. So when you start to diagnose a P2762 OBD2 trouble code, that should be checked. Along with the condition of the wiring and connectors on the transmission wiring harness. If all of that looks good, then the TCC pressure control solenoid will have the be tested directly.
