P2746: Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor B Circuit Range/Perf OBD-II Trouble Code

The intermediate shaft speed sensor/ISS sensor tells the ECU when to change gears, based on how fast the intermediate shaft is spinning. If this sensor is not performing properly, then a P2746 DTC will be saved.

How Serious is the Code?

If your vehicle has a P2746 diagnostic trouble code, it means that you will likely experience a number of drivability problems. Some of the transmission problems commonly associated with a P2746 DTC include delayed shifts, harsh shifts and limp mode.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P2746 include:

  • Delayed shifts
  • Harsh shifts
  • Erratic shifts
  • Transmission gets stuck in a gear
  • Limp Mode
  • Engine misfire
  • Hesitation when accelerating
  • Engine stalls when coming to a stop
  • Non-functioning speedometer

Causes

  • Intermediate shaft speed sensor failure
  • Transmission input speed sensor failure
  • Output speed sensor failure
  • Shorts or other wiring damage
  • Broken, loose or corroded connectors
  • Valve body or pressure related issues
  • Faulty shift solenoid
  • Engine temperature sensor failure

How to Diagnose the Code?

When diagnosing a P2746 OBDII trouble code, it’s important to check the level and condition of the transmission fluid. The wiring and connectors on the transmission wiring harness should also be checked. Manufacturer TSBs and software updates should be researched to see if there’s a known issue with a solution for this problem. If no problems have been found up to this point, the intermediate shaft speed sensor/ISS sensor should be tested, along with possibly the output shaft speed sensor, the engine temperature sensor and solenoids.
