P0880: TCM Power Input Signal OBD-II Trouble Code

Like all computers, a transmission control module has to receive power in order to function. Between the TCM and the battery are usually a number of power interrupt devices like a fuse, relay and/or a fusible link. If the ECU detects a problem on this power input circuit, a P0880 DTC will be saved.

How Serious is the Code?

A P0880 diagnostic trouble code is actually quite serious, and can result in a number of drivability problems including erratic shifting behavior and engines stalling.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0880 include:

  • Harsh shifting
  • Delayed shifts
  • Erratic shifting behavior
  • Engine stalling
  • Shift interlock function does not work
  • Speedometer malfunction

Causes

  • Failed ECU or TCM power relay
  • Blown fuse
  • Fusible link has failed
  • Damaged wiring or connectors
  • ECU or TCM programming issue

How to Diagnose the Code?

The first step to figuring out what is causing a P0880 OBDII trouble code, is to check all of the fuses and fusible links. The TCM power relay will also need to be tested. If everything checks out, then the appropriate circuit on the ECU/TCM plug will have to be tested with a voltmeter (with the ignition in the ON position). If there is no voltage reading, then the problem could be a broken wire, connector or ignition switch. If there is voltage, but it isn’t enough, the problem could be a shorted wire or corroded connector. If no voltage is present at all, the problem is most likely a failed ECU/TCM, or the very least, a software problem.
