Vehicles with manually shiftable automatic transmissions allow you to upshift and downshift manually, thanks to a number of transmission parts that include a switch on the gear selector, an actuator, and a bunch of wiring. A P0951 DTC means that a component within this collective circuit is not performing according to the preprogrammed parameters.
How Serious is the Code?
The P0951 diagnostic trouble code is not especially serious. However you won’t be able to manually control gear changes using the manual shift gate or paddles.
Symptoms of a P0951 include:
- Manual shifting function is disabled
- Damaged wiring and/or connectors
- Transmission shift switch failure
How to Diagnose the Code?
The process of diagnosing a P0951 OBDII trouble code generally begins with an examination of the wiring and connectors around the shift assembly. If no broken/frayed wires corroded/broken connectors are found, then the transmission manual shift switch/up and down shift switch should be tested and checked for signs of water damage.
What Repairs Will Fix P0951?
- Repair or replace damaged wiring and connectors
- Replace transmission shift switch
