P1874: Torque Converter Clutch Stator Temperature Switch Circuit High Voltage OBD-II Trouble Code

The torque converter clutch stator is a little turbine element that redirects the flow of pressurized hydraulic fluid/transmission fluid inside of the torque converter for the purposes of transferring torque from the engine through the transmission to the wheels. The temperature of the fluid has to be closely monitored by the ECU/TCM so they can decide on the appropriate shift pattern. If the temperature is deemed to be to be to high by the TCC stator temperature sensor (most common and General Motors and Isuzu vehicles), then a P1874 OBDII diagnostic trouble code will be stored.

How Serious is the Code?

A P1874 DTC is extremely serious, as it can be a harbinger of serious transmission problems. If the P1874 DTC was indeed caused by overheated transmission fluid, then transmission parts like transmission seals, clutches and bands could be severely damaged. If the transmission problem was caused by a faulty torque converter clutch stator temperature switch, then the ECU/TCM may not be in full control of the transmission shifting cycle.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P1874 include:

  • Slipping between gears
  • Delayed shifts
  • Erratic transmission behavior
  • Lack of torque converter lockup
  • Limp mode
  • Overheated transmission

Causes

  • Dirty transmission fluid/filter
  • Damaged/corroded wiring and/or connectors
  • Low transmission fluid level
  • Faulty TCC stator temperature sensor

How to Diagnose the Code?

The condition of the transmission fluid can have been a major affect on how the entire thing operates. So dirty or old transmission fluid can result in a P1874 DTC. However if no problems are found with the transmission fluid, then further diagnosis will be needed. To do this, a mechanic will need to inspect the condition of the wiring and connectors on the transmission harness, for signs of damage or corrosion. If nothing is found, the appropriate tests for have to be performed to determine if the TCC stator temperature sensor switch has gone bad.
