P2761: Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Ctrl Circuit Open OBD-II Trouble Code

A P2761 DTC means the ECU has detected an electrical issue with the torque converter clutch pressure control solenoid. This will result in a number of drivability issues, which can sometimes make the vehicle undrivable.

The P2761 diagnostic trouble code is rather serious, since it means the ECU cannot control the operation of the torque converter clutch. This will lead to a number of drivability issues including slipping, delayed shifts and engine stalling.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P2761 include:

  • Delayed, harsh or erratic shifts
  • Slipping through the gears
  • Engine stalling
  • Getting ‘stuck’ in a gear
  • Vehicle won’t move when in gear
  • Decreased fuel economy
  • Transmission overheats
  • Limp mode

Causes

  • Not enough ATF in the transmission
  • Transmission fluid and filter are dirty
  • The wiring and connectors may be damaged
  • Transmission fluid leak
  • Torque converter clutch pressure control solenoid has failed
  • Torque converter has failed
  • Fluid passages inside the transmission are blocked
  • Valve body is not functioning properly

How to Diagnose the Code?

To properly diagnose a P2761 OBDII trouble code, the first thing that should be checked is the level and condition of the transmission fluid. The wiring and connectors on the transmission wiring harness will also have to be checked for signs of damage and corrosion. Should everything appear to be in good order, the TCC pressure control solenoid will have to be checked.
