P2737: Pressure Control Solenoid F Ctrl Circuit Range/Performance OBD-II Trouble Code

In order to move gears and clutches around inside an automatic transmission, little devices known as pressure control solenoids, route pressurized transmission fluid down the right channel to move one of the clutch packs or gears. If the vehicle’s computer thinks that the pressure control solenoid labeled F, is not performing the way it’s intended to, a P2737 DTC will be set.

What Transmission Do I Have?

How Serious is the Code?

When a P2737 diagnostic trouble code is stored in vehicles memory, it means that your transmission is likely not going to perform the way it is supposed to. Some of the transmission problems that you may experience include slipping, delayed shifts and engine stalling. Needless to say, this is a fairly serious OBDII trouble code.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P2737 include:

  • Slipping in-and-out of gear
  • Harsh, delayed or erratic shifts
  • Transmission gets stuck in gear
  • Vehicle won’t move when in gear
  • Engine stalling
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Transmission overheats
  • Limp mode

Causes

  • Dirty transmission fluid/filter
  • Low transmission fluid
  • Frayed wiring
  • Corroded connectors
  • Failed pressure control solenoid
  • Failed transmission pump
  • Internal pressure blockage
  • Valve body issue
  • TCM or ECU failure

How to Diagnose the Code?

The first thing that should be considered when trying to diagnose a P2737 OBDII diagnostic trouble code, is the condition and level of transmission fluid. Dirty transmission fluid can actually cause the pressure control solenoid not to work right. Similarly, not enough transmission fluid will cause a drop in hydraulic pressure, which will significantly impact the performance. If the transmission fluid seems to be clean and at the right level, then the wiring and connectors on the transmission wiring harness should be checked for signs of damage, corrosion, framed wires and broken/corroded connectors. If no issues are found, then the solenoid itself, and possibly the transmission pump, valve body and ECU/TCM should be checked.
