GMC Acadia Transmission Problems

Designed to be a more fuel efficient alternative to the traditional full size SUV, the GMC Acadia was introduced for the 2007 model year, and rode on the new FWD Lambda platform. All-wheel drive and a selection of V6 engines were available, making it a viable option for people that wanted fullsize capability and reasonable fuel economy. To that end, first gen versions of this upscale 3 row crossover were fitted with the 6 speed 6T75 transmission. Let’s look at some of the most common GMC Acadia transmission problems.

GMC Acadia Recalls

2014 GMC Acadia Recall 14V092000 / 14048

Summary – According to the recall, the GMC Acadia transmission shift lever may become detached from the transmission shift cable adjuster. If this happens, the transmission shifter won’t work properly, and the gear indicator won’t be able to display the gear that’s actually selected.
Consequence – Should the shifter become detached while the truck is being driven, the driver won’t be able to select Park, even though the shifter is in the correct position. This can lead to an unintended rollaway, resulting in serious property damage and/or injury.
Remedy – This recall began on April 10, 2014, and GMC dealers were instructed to inspect and replace any affected transmission shift cable adjusters, free of charge. Owners can contact GMC at 1-800-462-8782, referring to recall # 14048. Or they can call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236

2009 GMC Acadia Recall 09V073000 / 09041

Summary – On some 2009 models, the transmission shift cable adjustment clip may come loose, causing the gear indicator to display the wrong gear.
Consequence – If this problem occurs, the driver could remove the ignition key and exit the vehicle thinking the transmission is in Park, even though it isn’t. This can lead to a rollaway, which can cause injury and/or property damage. A lesser consequence would be the inability to start the vehicle because the transmission is not in Park.
Remedy – This recall began on March 24, 2009, and GMC dealers were instructed to inspect and replace any affected transmission shift cable adjustment clips, free of charge. Owners can contact GMC at 1-800-462-8782, referring to recall # 09041. Or they can call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236

GMC Acadia Technical Service Bulletins (TSB)

TSB 07-07-30-019 – Check engine light on with poor vehicle performance – 6T70 Transmission | 6T75 Transmission
2008 Buick Enclave – 2007 GMC Acadia – 2007 Pontiac G6 – 2007 Saturn Aura – 2007 Saturn Outlook
Problem – Drivers may experience poor engine/transmission performance, along with the following transmission diagnostic trouble codes: P0716, P0717, P0722, P0723, P0751, P0756, P0776, P0796, P2714, P2723
Solution – These transmission problems may be caused by a failed speed sensor.

TSB 09-07-30-012B – 2008-2009 GMC Acadia
Problem – Owners may experience a Check Engine/SES light along with no reverse and/or a slip / flare or harsh shifts in 3rd and/or 5th gear. This condition may be caused by a broken 3-5-R clutch wave plate, allowing the apply piston to over- stroke, causing the piston to leak and causing loss of gear application. This normally will not occur before approximately 32,000 km (20,000 mi). Debris generated by the condition can affect the operation of the speed sensors and other clutches.
Solution – A new 35R clutch wave plate will need to be installed.

PIP4627A – 35R clutch wave plate broken – 6T70 Transmission | 6T75 Transmission
2007 – 2009 Saturn Aura – 2007 – 2009 Saturn Outlook – 2008 – 2009 Saturn Vue – 2007 – 2009 GMC Acadia – 2007 – 2009 Pontiac G5 – 2008 – 2009 Pontiac Torrent – 2008 – 2009 Buick Enclave – 2008 – 2009 Chevrolet Equinox – 2008 – 2009 Chevrolet Malibu – 2009 Chevrolet Traverse
Problem – On vehicles equipped with the 3.6L V6 and 6-speed automatic transmission, drivers may experience no reverse, slipping, and/or harsh shifting between 3rd-5th gears. They may also have diagnostic trouble codes P0776 and P0842. This condition is typically caused by a broken 35R clutch wave plate.
Solution – During the repair/rebuild process, the wave plate must be installed properly (with the rounded edge of the internal splines facing the 35R piston), in order to prevent premature failure.

TSB 13120A – Torque converter clutch sticking – 6T70 Transmission | 6T75 Transmission
2013 Buick Enclave – 2013 Cadillac SRX – 2013 Cadillac XTS – 2013 Chevrolet Malibu – 2013 Chevrolet Traverse – 2013 GMC Acadia – 2013 GMC Terrain
Problem – The torque converter clutch solenoid can stick due to debris in the transmission. When the vehicle is at the end of a coast-down, as the vehicle is coming to a stop, a stuck solenoid will fail to release the torque converter clutch. This keeps the engine directly connected to the driven wheels. As the vehicle stops, the engine speed will be pulled down below normal idle speed and the engine may stall. The vehicle can be immediately restarted and driven.
Solution – The valve control solenoid should be replaced, and the transmission control module will have to be reprogrammed in order to correct the problem.

2009 Acadia – TSB PIP4668
Problem: Symptoms associated with this service bulletin include:

  1. Hesitation when accelerating during a right hand turn around 15 mph.
    2. Hesitation/delay/harsh shift around 40 mph during 5-3-2 shift.
    3. Low speed hesitation during a 2-3 shift on light acceleration after launch.
    4. Cruise control busyness around 50 mph and/or poor shift feel.
5 .Delayed up-shift after a forced throttle downshift after returning to normal throttle.
    6. Nonlinear deceleration feel and/or tachometer swing on 5-4 coast-down shift as a result of entering and exiting Decel Fuel Cut Off (DFCO)

Solution: The transmission control module will have to be reprogrammed in order to correct these problems.

Common Problems with the GMC Acadia Transmission

Related to DTC P0741 – 2008-2010 GMC Acadia
Problem – If after rebuilding a 6T75E, the TCC remains stuck in the ‘off’ position, the problem may be due to using the incorrect control valve channel upper plate.
Solution – Install a revised control valve channel upper plate with slot (GM part #24226373).

Input/Output Speed Sensor Issues – 6T70E Transmission
Problem – When repairing a failed input speed sensor or output speed sensor, steering system damage could occur.

2013 GMC ACADIA. WHEN ACCELERATING AT ABOUT 1500-2200 RPMS BAD SHAKING,AFTER THAT SMOOTHS RIGHT OUT. TRIED CHANGING FUUID IN TRANS,PLUGS,WIRES.LEANING TOWARD TORQUE CONVERTER.NO CODES,DEALER SUGGESTS NEW TRANSMISSION. WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST?

Susan

I have a 2016 GMC Acadia SLT with 42000km. I bought my car used at 36k and noticed 8 months after some vibrating/shuddering when driving around 30-40km/hr. And the odd time my car revs from 3-4K rpm with a lag/no power.

About 7 weeks ago the engine light turned on and stayed on. I have some warranty left so I took it into a GMC dealer/shop and what came up was a torque converter code. They had to top up about a litre of transmission fluid ( no leak), their transmission mechanic drove it home two nights to do a diagnostic test. He definitely felt the vibrating/shuddering/lag but the engine light has not come on again and they believe there may be another issue with the transmission.

Because the engine light has not come on they won’t look into any farther until it reappears. I understand that transmission issues can be very difficult, but I’ve been told to keep driving my car until the engine light comes on. But this doesn’t seem right
and the light still has not come on.

It has started vibrating more often, almost every time I’m driving on an incline. And now at 40km/hr sometimes 60k and 80km/h. There is the high rpm with no power but no noticeable smell. I don’t trust driving my car, I have a young child as well so I’m basically taking it to work and back ( 10 min drive).

Anyone else have this issue? How to I get them to figure out the issue and fix it?!

I do not have a transmission problem but I am a retired automotive tech with 47 years in the business. I will tell you that the dealer is NOT very good at fixing your problem. If the tech drove your vehicle to two nights and felt your problem, THEY CAN MAKE THE REPAIR FROM THE SYMPTOM ALONE! THIS IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!!!!!

If the dealer you went to will only fix a “code problem” it is my opinion that is it is a pretty poor service department OR they do not have a technician good enough to address your problem. I was not heavily into transmission repairs, but I do know enough about it to say FROM READING THE BULLETINS that you likely need a torque convertor clutch solenoid to start. If they “open the trans” and find more than normal metal accumulation, you may need a compete overhaul. I have been retired for ten years, and in that time transmissions have changed dramatically. But something that never changes is an abnormal amount of metal circulating through the transmission is not a good sign, especially because there are several solenoids in the later model transmissions. I am glad I still have my rusty old 2002 Olds Silhouette with 233K miles on it. I did one transmission overhaul at about 130K because the original main shaft was not hardened metal. My “trans guy” said that the “soft” main shaft” was about the only problem he had with that transmission. So I’ll likely drive this one into the grave, MY GRAVE THAT IS.

MY SUGGESTION TO YOU IS, CONTACT GM CUSTOMER RELATIONS ON THIS ONE. They should put you in contact with the ZONE REP on this one. If not, you can request the dealer do it for you. THEY HAVE TO DO IT! If there is another GM DEALER that is convenient to go to, that is another option.

If none of this helps, shoot me an email. I will not give up on this yet!!!

I had technician drive my car home from the GMC dealership and then he noticed the shuddering sounds that I told them I was feeling and hearing. He said that its the torque converter; however, he also suggested that I replace the entrire transmission. Considering that I have the extended warranty that’s just what I want done. I purchased my 2016 GMC Acadia at just under 50,000 miles and I’m now at 74,400 miles. I purchased that warranty so that I could have a peace of mind just in case something went wrong and I’m so glad that I did. When I test drove this vehicle in August of 2019 it seemed as if there was some hesitation and the changing between the gears seemed a little off. But I had two different techs drive it before I signed off and neither one of them felt what I initially felt and here we are almost 2 years later. This was my first major vehicle purchase in over 15 years because I was driving my 2000 Toyota Camry which still drives fine but I have some minor problems.

My 2013 Acadia has had transmission problems from 30K miles. Shifts in to neutral while accelerating. I drove 8 hours and then the trans wouldn’t shift up so I had to keep it under 45 MPH….no codes from trans. Dealer and GMC said if there are no codes from the trans….they can’t fix it. Many problems with the radio failing…..Worst car I have ever owned. Discusted with GM and the dealer. I will never by another GM product after the terrible support that I got.

Ours just did that same thing. But has no reverse, and seems like the shifter is in incorrect gear from what it shows. Also would down shift like crazy when you lift off the accelerator. Did you find out what your problem was? No code here either.

There was a shifter lever recall on some of these vehicles… you may want the techs to look at that. Sounds like what you may be experiencing.

There is a TSB that is related to the gear shift lever failing. Contact the dealer about the TSB to see if they can resolve your problem with the transmission shift because the shift lever is a problem. Even though I retired 10 years ago, I spent 47 years in the business. I was said to be in the top technicians in the Chicagoland area at the time. I did a lot of high tech repairs and most of mine were by found by using a lab scope and wiring schematics. All I know is I would NOT give up on a problem car until it was fixed, and you shouldn’t either. There are other methods to use to get your vehicle fixed properly by GM. You can call Customer Relations. The number should be in the Owners Manual. They should put you in contact with the Zone Rep for that dealership. HOPEFULLY they will get ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS RESOLVED. Not to brag, but I and a few others in the repair shops around Chicago could fix cars that the dealerships in that area could not. It takes persistence and maybe a little luck. But there are a few people in the aftermarket repair industry who make, and take training classes for independent shops to help their mechanics able to stay up with the newer technologies and changes, but from a totally different approach at the diagnostic end. For instance, your radio has an intermittent problem. The likelihood of ANYONE finding that problem are probably zero to none. What I would do in cases like that, and to save on diagnostic time, I would use a schematic and trace the entire circuit from its point of origin and into the radio. Sometimes it is in the radio, but MOST intermittent problems I found to be in the wiring and connectors. I would disconnect and inspect every wiring connector in the circuit. The “pins” in some of the connectors are off center and can get bent to the side causing an intermittent that may show up with temperature changes. In every case I would treat both sides of the connector with a CONTACT ENHANCER. The one I used most was CAIG DEOX-IT GOLD-GS. There are other more expensive products I have used, but I never had a problem that I felt was a “connector connection problem” that was not corrected with the Caig product. Search the internet for the best aftermarket repair shop you can find. Look for the ones with 5-stars only. Hopefully the are some nearby. Those are generally the shops that have the techs that can fix your problems. Talk to the owner and see if they have that level of expertise. If not, most shop owners will know of a good shop that can do that type of repair.

Good luck, and if you still own this vehicle BE SURE TO TELL CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND THE ZONE REP THAT YOU HAD YOUR PROBLEM WHILE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY! THAT SHOULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN IF YOU HAVE TO PAY OUT-OF-POCKET FOR THE REPAIR, OR MAYBE $100 OR SO TOWARDS THE REPAIR. I hope you find a solution to your problem.

I bought a 2018 Acadia with just over 2,000 miles in it. 3 weeks after purchase the temp gauge maxed to H with all the bells and whistles. Nothing could be found. Only fluid was a little low. Started again the other day. Took to the dealer. Nothing could be found, car didn’t overheat at mechanic. No codes were found. Now it’s doing it again about a week later I have less than 21,000 miles on it. Gauges went nearly to H, a/c gets hot while in idle. Once I begin to drive it goes back to normal temp and a/c is cooler.

Check cooling fan operation

william link
Reply to  Marilyn

While looking for input on transmission problems, I found your post. I suspect it has been fixed by now. But my input would’ve been to check the cooling fans. I hope this may help others who read this forum. If you are idling and running hot, BOTH cooling fans should be running, You can open the hood to see that. The reason the temperature drops at highway speeds is because you have the airflow needed for the coolant to cool. IT’S THAT SIMPLE!
And if your dealer doesn’t know that, you need to find a better dealer!!!

There are a few connectors that haul a lot of amperage to run those motors. They can be inspected visually for being burned or melted. But I know after 47 years in the business that even “no-brainer” repairs can be BEYOND THE SCOPE for a lot of technicians. You need to find one who takes pride and cares about what he does for a living. I’m sorry to say, but really good technicians are a dieing breed! When performing diagnostic repairs, they have to know more than reading what a scanner tells them. Unfortunately that is where todays technicians fail. They are taught to think a scanner is the only way to fix a problem. Computers LIE! But some technicians won’t believe it.

Computers “cannot think!” They only know what it sees. If you have a corrupted input, you’re going to have a corrupted output. You need to find a really good technician. Start by searching in your area for a 5-star shop. Ask if they can perform high tech diagnosis or if they know of a shop that does. Believe me, I wish I was still physically able to do everyone’s repairs I see on this forum. At least the diagnosis portions of it. Most of what I read are problems that I have had in the past. It takes a well developed approach, but that takes years of “hard knocks” to learn. It is almost a trade in itself. I never got rich as a mechanic, at least financially, but I grew rich in pride, ability, and confidence. But my good days are over. I wish I could’ve been your technician, because I KNOW I would’ve found your answers. Good luck in your ventures. I hope you can connect with a good mechanic SOON!

In the transmission control module in the front of the transmission (nearest the radiator) are plastic pressure discs that allow fluid pressure to move the correct shift solenoid. The discs crack, break and the sensors don’t know what to do. A company called Sonnax makes the replacement discs and tools very inexpensive. Takes about 3 hours to replace.

I have a 2015 GMC Acadia and I have 80,0000 miles and is still under warranty. The transmission doesn’t seem to be shifting right between 2nd and 3rd gear. The car feels like it is down shifting between 20-25 mph. Sometimes the jerking feeling is so harsh it almost feels like being rear ended. The dealership garage doesn’t seem to know what the issue is. I have taken it to them four times in 2 weeks and they still can’t seem to figure it out. This last time they kept the car for 3 days. They wanted to keep it longer but I need my transportation and they didn’t want to give me a loaner. We finally worked it out that I could get a loaner In a couple days. Still doesn’t make me happy. My warranty will be up soon and they have no clue what’s wrong with the car. I called GMC and they aren’t very helpful At all. I wish I didn’t have two more years to pay on this peace of junk. I will definitely trade it soon and I will stay far away from gmc vehicles. Mainly because I feel like They really don’t care. I called the GMC customer care and they opened a case however they won’t call me back. I’ve left massages, I’ve called them and I get nowhere. It’s horrible customer service. The dealership garage already had me irritated and gmc costumer care seems to be worse. This time I will search the reviews before we make another purchase.

Similar to my 2015. Took it in due to the shaking when I would hit 25-30 MPH. They said it was the motor mount and charged me $250. As soon as it was taken off the lot, could still feel the shaking. They took another look and told me I needed a new transmission, $4,800. I love the vehicle and do not want to go with any other make/model but I cannot risk having this happen again. Sad to see this happen with GMC.

2015 GMC Acadia Denali with 35K miles. Had similar hesitation in shifting when at the range of 20-30mph and after a few more days, additional hesitation when shifting at 40-50mph. Took to the dealer as it’s a Certified Pre-Owned purchase with a Lifetime Powertrain Warranty. It took them a few days to find the issue, but discovered it to be a torque converter and seal. We’re lucky it’s covered under the warranty or else it would have likely cost $3-5K to disassemble the transmission and replace.

I had something similar with my 99 chevy truck with 350 engine. Ended up being the radiator needed replaced. The transmission was getting hot on the highway and it would go into a safety mode or something. When I would get off the highway at a stoplight I’d start going again and when it shifted from 1st to 2nd it was locking up and would feel like I was getting rear ended.

Just bought a 2012 Acadia at 102,000 miles. Several problems, timing chain had just been replaced, Power steering fluid leaked out through the cooler, the antenna was bad. and I noticed a surging when the vehicle started uphill. The surging is validated by the tachometer. It stops surging when it shifts to a lower gear. It also seems to be intermittent at lease when the dealer representative took it for a test drive.
I started researching the Acadia, like I should have before I bought this nightmare. I had a relative that had good service from an Acadia that they had only a short time. I now know I would not have bought his vehicle. I feel like an idiot. but I’ll just have to figure out what to do from here. I was told by a GM service center that the Torque converter is bad.now the fix is $2000. I can only hope that is the fix so I can get this vehicle traded off. Any suggestions?

I purchased a 2009 Acadia SLT on 1-5-18. It came with a new transmission with a year warranty. On 1-6/18 I was turning left and had the tranny slip. Called the dealer and has told to contact the place that installed the new transmission. They have replaced the transmission 4 times in 108 days. They have had it 35 days. I just went on a road trip of 600 miles and you guessed it the transmission wants to shift in and out when it is going up a grade. When will my nightmare end? I know when I get rid of this car! Can’t afford to keep it and can’t afford to replace it. GM should have to make these right!

I bought a 2009 GMC Acadia on 7/11/13 w/79,000 miles on it, from a reputable dealership, supposedly. I have had it in the shop 5 times since I bought it. Cruise control went out, Catalytic converter replaced, timing chains replaced, battery replaced, motor mount replaced, and now the transmission needs replacing. I was told it had a 5yr/100,000 mile Powertrain warranty on it, but then on 10/16/13, I was told that expired on 7/29/13, because the car was sold in July 2008. Prior to buying an Acadia, I read where there were many problems with the 2007 & 2008 transmissions and that new transmissions were installed in Acadias in 2010. How can I prove if this is true? And how much should a transmission replacement cost?

I bought a 2009 Acadia in March 2017 at 108k miles and have had almost the same exact list of items replaced… cruise control switch, battery, alternator, almost every coil pack, timing chains (within 24 hours of purchasing), one of the internal computer modules, and it presently needs a new catalytic converter and has transmission slipping, which means I need to figure out how to get rid of this thing, but I don’t want to sell it privately, and don’t want to go back to the dealer I bought it from because they just yanked me around on the transmission issues until my warranty expired.

This is amazing 2017 Arcadia here 60k miles had all these problems. Dealership could careless. The torque converter failed at 56k and still same stuff. Feels like it gets caught up in gears. Rpm flutters. I’m about to trade it in lost cause
