Chevy Traverse Transmission Recalls

Recall 09V073000 / 09041 Transmission shift cable clip failure
2009 Buick Enclave, 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2009 Chevrolet HHR, 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2009 Chevrolet Traverse, 2009 GMC Acadia, 2009 Pontiac G5, 2009 Pontiac G6, 2009 Saturn Aura, 2009 Saturn Outlook

Summary –
On 276,729 2009 GM vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjustment clip may come loose, causing the gear indicator to display the wrong gear.

Consequence –
If this problem occurs, the driver could remove the ignition key and exit the vehicle thinking the transmission is in Park, even though it isn’t. This can lead to a rollaway, which can cause injury and/or property damage. A lesser consequence would be the inability to start the vehicle because the transmission is not in Park.

Remedy –
This recall began on March 24, 2009, and Chevrolet dealers were instructed to inspect and if necessary, replace the shift adjustment cable clip. Concerned owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236

2007 – 2009 Saturn Aura – 2007 – 2009 Saturn Outlook – 2008 – 2009 Saturn Vue – 2007 – 2009 GMC Acadia – 2007 – 2009 Pontiac G5 – 2008 – 2009 Pontiac Torrent – 2008 – 2009 Buick Enclave – 2008 – 2009 Chevrolet Equinox – 2008 – 2009 Chevrolet Malibu – 2009 Chevrolet Traverse
Problem – On vehicles equipped with the 3.6L V6 and 6-speed automatic transmission, drivers may experience no reverse, slipping, and/or harsh shifting between 3rd-5th gears. They may also have diagnostic trouble codes P0776 and P0842. This condition is typically caused by a broken 35R clutch wave plate.
Solution – During the repair/rebuild process, the wave plate must be installed properly (with the rounded edge of the internal splines facing the 35R piston), in order to prevent premature failure.

TSB 13120A – Torque converter clutch sticking – 6T70 Transmission | 6T75 Transmission
2013 Buick Enclave – 2013 Cadillac SRX – 2013 Cadillac XTS – 2013 Chevrolet Malibu – 2013 Chevrolet Traverse – 2013 GMC Acadia – 2013 GMC Terrain
Problem – The torque converter clutch solenoid can stick due to debris in the transmission. When the vehicle is at the end of a coast-down, as the vehicle is coming to a stop, a stuck solenoid will fail to release the torque converter clutch. This keeps the engine directly connected to the driven wheels. As the vehicle stops, the engine speed will be pulled down below normal idle speed and the engine may stall. The vehicle can be immediately restarted and driven.
Solution – The valve control solenoid should be replaced, and the transmission control module will have to be reprogrammed in order to correct the problem.

Can I drive with a transmission problem?

If your Chevy Traverse can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.

How often does a Chevy Traverse transmission need to be replaced?

The overall lifespan of a Chevy Traverse transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the Chevy Traverse transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.

How are Chevy Traverse transmission issues diagnosed?

It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your Chevy Traverse transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.

How is a Chevy Traverse transmission replaced?

In order to replace your Chevy Traverse transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed. Once it is in place, for the 6L80, the vehicle PCM will have to be reprogrammed / reflashed to accept the new transmission using the latest GM subscription.

How to Solve Chevy Traverse Transmission Problems

Solution A: Buy a Used Chevy Traverse Transmission

The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.

Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Chevy Traverse Transmission

Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or transmission rebuild. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.

Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Chevy Traverse Transmission

Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

Possible Wheel Bearing issue?

I have a 2015 Traverse LTZ all wheel drive, when the transmission is under load such as going up a slight incline, it acts like the transmission is slipping and catching very fast. Acceleration can stop the issue. There are no repair codes. Any Suggestions?

Hello. We have a 2016 LT AWD and all of sudden have a P0716/P0717 code. My wife was driving it and it just started slipping and also reverse doesn’t seem to work. I went and got a replacement input speed sensor from auto zone but have no idea if the sensor is external or internal to the transmission case? Anyone have anything to help me hunt this down tomorrow to try and swap it out?

Just replaced my 2013 LTZ traverse with 95000 miles transmission, started shuttering between 25 -35 mph, torque converter went bad, but at that point u might as well pay for a new transmission.

Well, after reading the comments below, I’m glad I’m not the only one. I own a 2015 Traverse LT with 99,000 miles my radio light has went out, my traction control has acted up, I paid for the tires that were under recall that I never got, my traction control switch is not always properly worked, and now my car’s went to jerking and shuddering between 25 to 35 miles per hour. I finally got the dealership to see what it was doing and they found that the torque converter went out my transmission. Upon further reading I drive ALOT ( and this motor is not even going to last me but maybe possibly another year. The Transmissions and motor are saying that they only going to last a 160,000 miles,SAD part is I just traded another Chevy with 330,000 miles and still running for this car. Not happy!!!. Nothing has coded, do regular oil changes ect, thankfully I bought the extended warranty to pay for this $4,500 fix. And to top it off, Chevrolet is ON STRIKE so, we don’t even know when the parts will be in to fix my car. WILL NOT BE BUYNG ANOTHER CHEVY!😡
Thanks for sharing.😔

I have a 2016 chevy Traverse with 80K. Same transmission issue as many others have noted – at approx 35 mph shaking, rumbling and vibrating like driving over grooved pavement. Never again Chevy.Jello foreign manufactuers! $3500 in additional, unnecessary cost to consumer with no accountability by GM.

2016 Chevy Traverse- I don’t know the code but it said “Traction control off / Service Brake System” and lost speed and I couldn’t control the wheel. Turned the car off and back on and it resolved. Mechanic says there is water leaking on a module….any idea??

Check your brake fluid level. Mine did the same thing. Fluid was low. No leaks? Perhaps brakes bleed during a brake job and not topped off?

I have the same issue but my engine light threw a P0989 code to replace the transmission fluid pressure sensor switch e circuit low… I just don’t know if it is located outside the transmission on the valve body or if it is internal. Outside is an easy fix, internal is expensive

Remove your air filter tubing to the throttle boby, thoroughly clean your map sensor and wipe out the air tube of all the oil and debris. This should fix your problem. The dirt and oil cases a false reading and then your transmission goes into limp mode.

Our 2016 Chevrolet Traverse transmission just went out, no warning of any kind. Chevrolet’s warranty is 60,000 and ours has 63,000. So they are willing to replace the transmission with a new one for $3,500. I am not very happy with GM right now. Just bought a 2018 Z-71 Silverado which I am happy with but I don’t feel like I would ever buy another GM product at this point. I measure the quality of a company by the way they handle a problem and try to help the customer. I know that all things that are mechanical can have problems but I just traded off my 2007 Toyota Tundra with 170,000 miles and the only thing I ever did to it was change the oil and tires. Looks like in the future I will be buying something other than a GM product.

The exact same thing happened to me. 2016 trans just went out with 64k miles. GMC said sorry, the cost for a remanufacture trans will cost me $5,500 because the warranty of 60k miles expired. The dealer replaced a transmission module at 59k mikes under
the warranty. Yes there were signs of a trans issue. I believe they new that and installed a bandaid. I
have bought several new vehicles from Chevy as a business owner and for personal use. GMC customer service is the worst. I will take my loyalty elsewhere by spending this year at least 1 million dollars to up grade my business fleet. Just simply bad business!!!!! Do the Math!!

The exact same thing with my wife’s 11 Traverse LTZ AWD. Finally got it looked at by a reputable shop that I have done business with before (thru my shop). Happens mostly at highway speeds and between 1500 and 2500 RPM its like it cant move. Have to either hit the brakes and slow down a bit or speed up a bit for it to get out of its “groove”. Its either gotta be a complete rebuild or buy one from a junk yard. If its a good shop I recommend a rebuild cause the will be able to correct factory defects and your basically getting a new transmission. Junk Yard ones might be cheaper but know one knows the condition of the unit and if it hadn’t been corrected you could be heading in the same direction again winding up have to get it repaired. Best advice as well, which ever route you go have the transmission flushed at the factory recommended interval or close to it. Clean fluid will undoubtedly make it last longer

Randy

Transmission acts as though it has a mind of its own. It down shifts and up shifts (hard) when not needed. In slow drop and go traffic between 15 & 20 MPH shifts are extremely violent. Don’t know (WTF?) The malfunction is intermittent.

2011 Traverse about 121000 miles I think there is too much side to side play in the driver side inner CV joint, I get a rattle kind of clanking sound from the drivers side but really only at low speeds. I would send you a video but don’t see a way to link.

Did you ever resolve it? I’m experiencing the same thing. My 2013 LTZ, 95K miles had low transmission fluid (and sort of dirty), which I topped off. When coming to stops, especially if going from fast to full stop in a short term, the engine dies. I used to drive stick shift so I tested in L (low gear) mode, and if I manually shift it from 4, 3, 2, and then 1 (once under 5-10 mph), it doesn’t kill the engine. If I downshift manually from 2 to 1 before 10 mph, or if I stop too fast, then it did kill the engine once. Also, if I’m using automatic D mode, before I come to a stop, if I switch to neutral, it obviously doesn’t kill the engine because it’s not having to deal with downshifting to gear 1. But if I do that, when putting it back to Drive and driving, around gears 2 or 3, I feel erratic power rushes. I don’t feel that when using L mode.

But for the most part, I suspect the issue is something controlling the downshifting is not doing it properly or fast enough. I got code P0742, which states Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) System-Stock On. Auto zone checked the codes and says I should replace the Transmission Control Solenoid, which I think is inside the actual transmission. Failure of this device will “cause erratic shifting of the transmission).

Anyways, this solenoid is inside the transmission and dirty transmission fluid can cause problems too so I’m going to drain and replace the transmission fluid myself first to see if that helps. I took auto in high school so I know what I’m doing thankfully. If that doesn’t work, I might reset the Transmission Control Unit. There’s an easy way to do it to let it re-learn your driving habits. If that doesn’t work, then gotta take it to the shop and hope they can actually fix it, which I fear they won’t be able to.
