Can I drive with a transmission problem?

If your Pontiac Grand Prix can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.

How often does a Pontiac Grand Prix transmission need to be replaced?

The overall lifespan of a Pontiac Grand Prix transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the Pontiac Grand Prix transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.

How are Pontiac Grand Prix transmission issues diagnosed?

It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your Pontiac Grand Prix transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.

How is a Pontiac Grand Prix transmission replaced?

In order to replace your Pontiac Grand Prix transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed. Once it is in place, for the 6L80, the vehicle PCM will have to be reprogrammed / reflashed to accept the new transmission using the latest GM subscription.

How to Solve Pontiac Grand Prix Transmission Problems

Solution A: Buy a Used Pontiac Grand Prix Transmission

The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.

Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Pontiac Grand Prix Transmission

Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.

Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Pontiac Grand Prix Transmission

Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

Car will shift and move when the tranny is cold.once it warms up you can shift it but wont move.would this have to do with a temp sensor.and you can also hear it whining.ive syphoned most of the fluid out and put in new fluid to proper level but it still make the whining noise when its cold

Car doesn’t will move when first started up. Then after running a while it starts to feel like it is slipping and then doesn’t move in any gear. Can shut the car off then right back on and it will move and then eventually goes back to not moving

After turning on the engine I have a beeping noise in a car five long too short to short to short after 5 seconds too short and transmission stopped working so I have a 5 seconds to drive a car there’s some noise from the power converter. To be able to drive I have to reset the computer and I have exactly the same symptoms transmission after driving about the 5 seconds is not responding.

GXP – V8 – 5.3L 5328cc 325ci GAS MFI vin C type LS4 – 2 valve OHV had the tranny rebuilt. No 1st or 4th gear. Would that be a valve body problem

At first you could be driving and everything be fine then all of a sudden it would start slipping and then be fine and drive great for a few days. It got to where it would feel like it was slipping when I would take off at first. Then I was in reverse and I was backing out and I stopped to listen to someone and then gave it alil gas pretty quick it back up slightly and then stalled and will not connect to the transmission it fills like. Its going into what gear I put it in yes but it’s not connecting in to any gear. Like you can put it in drive and it will just be that if you give it gas it just sits there if u put it in reverse it just sits there. Other then that it starts and sounds fine. Could it just need to be flushed and new transmission fluid put into it and a filter?? Could it be something like the solenoid?

Sometimes when I back out and put in drive and hit the gas to go it feels like the transmission is slipping but if I let off gas and wait a sec it will catch and go. I notice that this mainly happens when I have been driving for awhile and have to hey back in and go again before the car cools off. I watch the transmission temp it normally sets at 206 degrees but here lately it’s been setting at 213 even got to 221 go I was hoping the fluid was thin a wore out and I could just service the fluid. Any advice is appreciated.

My 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix3.8 L started slipping when going to gear and then wont go over 40 miles per hour is really harsh between first and second and then barely goes into 3rd at high RPM. P0503 is code that’s showing.I have already replaced the speed sensor because the speedometer also isn’t working but that didn’t work.

Maybe not transmission?! It kinda jerks when I’m slowly accelerating stops when I hit gas or let off the gas completely, my rpms bounce when it does it also. I took it in thought maybe it had something to do with fuel he said it may be my transmission but was unsure as I have no codes or dummy lights on whatsoever. Was just doing it a little bit but has gotten tad worse over time. Any suggestions?! 2008 as basic as basic gets 140,000 started at around 110,000. (I drive a lot, about 30,000/yr).

I had the same problem. I changed fluid and filter and it fixed the hard shifting but before I did that my trans temp went WAY up one day and I lost reverse. Changed fluid and filter fixed the hard shifting issue though. Just keep an eye on your trans fluid temps.
