Can I drive with a transmission problem?

If your Lincoln LS can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.

How often does a Lincoln LS transmission need to be replaced?

The overall lifespan of a Lincoln LS transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the Lincoln LS transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.

How are Lincoln LS transmission issues diagnosed?

It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your Lincoln LS transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.

How is a Lincoln LS transmission replaced?

In order to replace your Lincoln LS transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed. Once it is in place, for the 6L80, the vehicle PCM will have to be reprogrammed / reflashed to accept the new transmission using the latest GM subscription.

How to Solve Lincoln LS Transmission Problems

Solution A: Buy a Used Lincoln LS Transmission

The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.

Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Lincoln LS Transmission

Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.

Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Lincoln LS Transmission

Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

My Check transmission light comes on but the transmission shifts great and runs great. It resets after turning off the car but comes on 20mins later. Again still shifts great and runs great. What can this be telling me? Change the fluid and filter?

The hose from my transmission cooler had got pinch and finally ripped ,so all the fluid leaked out. Replaced the hose that broke but now I need to find a place that can put transmission fluid in it for me. Have not drove it since the fluid leaked out.

2004 Lincoln Ls v6 with 78k is starting to hard shift between 20 and 30mph. I just had it diagnosed at the ford dealer and they specified, the actual control shift solenoid pack is good and functioning as it should. The transmission did however throw the following codes P0708, P1702, P2072. Now through research, this seems to be the range sensor? I would appreciate any input on this as the vehicle has been garage kept, I have all the vehicle history from 2004 to current.

I have a 2005 Town Car. The only thing wrong with it is the transmission clunks when down shifting, like when as almost stopped then resuming acceleration.

2006 Lincoln LS V8, 137K. Transmission seems to be slipping, but the previous owner did not care for this beauty correctly, when a caliper started leaking, he took OFF the break pads and used the Manual 4 speed option to downshift instead of breaking, (breaks are replaced already) did a lot of after market additions and in my opinion has caused many new issues that could have been avoided. The factory LS has 17” wheels and tires, this one has 20 inch low profile, running on what seems to be BENT rims. The steering wheel shakes violently between 40-70 below and above there is not problems. Took the Ls on our first road trip together, 380 miles, when I left my alignment was good, today my steering wheel is tilted to the right. Thank you for reading my book, and PLEASE help me save my new baby!

That really sounds like more un diagnosed issues and wear to the transmission and braking module.

Mine is doing that too and I just found out today that it’s the transmission shift solenoid. Gonna cost me about $600 to get it fixed. It is very common in the 2000-2005 Lincoln ls cars. 🙁
