Can I drive with a transmission problem?

If your Chevy Uplander can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.

How often does a Chevy Uplander transmission need to be replaced?

The overall lifespan of a Chevy Uplander transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the Chevy Uplander transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.

How are Chevy Uplander transmission issues diagnosed?

It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your Chevy Uplander transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.

How is a Chevy Uplander transmission replaced?

In order to replace your Chevy Uplander transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed.

Recommendations for Chevy Uplander transmission issues?

To save time and get back on the road faster, have your 17-digit truck VIN# handy and you can get an online quote for a reman Chevy Uplander transmission here, then find a local shop using our Find a Shop guide to install it for you.

How to Solve Chevy Uplander Transmission Problems

Solution A: Buy a Used Chevy Uplander Transmission

The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.

Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Chevy Uplander Transmission

Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.

Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Chevy Uplander Transmission

Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

From stop (after warming up a few miles) will go but stays in lower gear and won’t shift for a few seconds then shifts hard to next gear, intermittent problem. 2007 sv6 3.9

It won’t go into drive from a stop I have to put it in first and second and then drive after 30 miles an hour

Transmission don’t take D-3-2-1 but only Reverse. Drive in Reverse but not moves in another gears when I select. Don’t give any electronic faulty code for diagnostic, no oil leak, noise, smoke or dash light.

Taking off from a stop sign or light, I occasionally hear a clattering sound similar to playing cards clicking over bicycle spokes, and then jumps into gear.
It only happens 1 or 2 times a day in city driving. My uplander only has 111000 miles on it, and is great condition otherwise.
Thanks in advance, Allen Howey

It won’t acknowledge going into D 321 or R until I shut off my van (2006 Chevy uplander V6 automatic 179xxxkms) off and turn. It back on then quickly put it into 3rd and step on the gas forcefully it then goes up till approx between 40-60kms until I slow down. And or stop at a red light/stop sign then I have to repeat those actions all over. It also starts to over heat more quickly while doing this usually when I start it on a cold morning and try to drive it without waking it up there is a nasty clunking sound when I put it in either R or D I’ve only had the van for 2 months I got ripped off when I bought it off the previous owners. Every code and its owner is popping up where the kms are supposed to show I have no brights but the light stating brights are on stays on when I go to turn left the lights turn off sometimes and now there is a whining sound coming from the transmission when I go to turn more so when I turn left. When I apply the brakes it feels like the transmission is gunna drop out of it it’s jumps in a sort of a way. I have an appointment I can’t miss for the sake of my life (quiet literally) this Thursday morning and my funds are sitting in my mail box approx 5hrs away from me. With noone that really wants to help me in anyway shale or form.

I have 2007 chevy uplander front wheel with 110K on it. Last week when I was driving 5 m/h to make a right turn at the light suddenly my trans goes off, I believe I touched the arm but didn’t. It sounded like it’s in neutral but was in gear. I put 3rd from drive and pulled next street over and parked. None of the gears took it but reverse! I check under van but no leak or loosing part around.
I called tow truck through AAA and went to B&B trans shop in Daly City, Ca. They said they will check and tell me the diagnosis next day. They called me next day and said they didn’t find and code or reading in computer but it’s better I replace it about $2500-3000! I said no but still they charged me $125 for nothing and they put on release paper “customer refused to be repaired” without knowing what was the fault. Maybe little connection or whatsoever.

Have a 2006 Chevy Uplander that when you come to a stop and then go to accelerate again there is a delay and then harsh engagement and shift through all gears with no problems. This sometimes happens consistently other times randomly, and then sometimes disappears and Works totally normal for quite a while before it happens again. There are no trouble codes set. Anybody have any idea on what may are you going on?

Identical problem just started happening to my ’08 Uplander (182k mi) over the past month. Car is super reliable so hate to get rid of it. May just replace have to replace tranny.

Same as Ken, exactly. Fluid is clear, filter replaced 30k miles ago. Has 165k miles.
Not so bad but wish it never happens. Never runs hot or anything like that. Otherwise reliable. Curious about resolutions. I am not fixing till I understand more.
Thanks if feedback.

Exactly the same thing happening to mine. Wish I had the answer, don’t wanna believe it is the transmission. I changed the throttle body and sensor in the hopes of that being it, but no change. Would really like to know what causes this… apparently it is common

Mine has been identical to what you describe, until 3 days ago. Suddenly it started shaking, then wouldn’t accelerate over 40ish. Had no clue as to the problem until I got home and under it the next day. Wish I could post a picture…… tranny housing has baseball size hole. Mechanic said nothing hit, something broke or was broke inside and busted out. No noise, never heard what I’d have expected to hear after seeing the hole! 140k and all maintenance done as scheduled….. want a picture….. send email to hill92601@gmail.com. Would love any input. I’m in my 50’s, not driven hard or ragged out.

Im dealing with the same things happening to my GF’s 08′ Uplander. included all of y’alls mentioned issues, I’ve just turned vehicle off. Cycling the ignition on and off.. from off to just right before you attempt to start it up. About 6 times then it went well afterwards. Drove smooth 😁.

Pressure Control Solenoid

It was the pressure sensor in my 06. You have to tear half the van apart to get the side cover off. Part was under $100. Took me half a day. Went ahead a did a filter change. Wish I would have done the TCC solenoid as well. Mine falls in and out when on long trips on a flat road. Has 154,000 on it now and still going strong. Serviced every 50,000 miles.

I have a 2005 and it did the bumping, I put in a can of seafoam hydra trans tune keeping level correct. It stopped doing it for quite awhile as I was driving it every day. Thought fixed but it’s been sitting and weather got colder and it did it twice. May get another can and add a little keeping level correct by hosing some tranny fluid out when cold. I had taken a couple long trips and I thought it was fixed. Tranny fluid was changed right before I bought it with 29k miles in 2019 by machine.

How is that seafoam hydra working after you put it again? I seem to be getting the same.problem as a lot of others and sinking even $1000 on a risk vehicles is not a solution.

46 k mi now – had tranny fluid and filter changed 30 k mi and can of seafoam tranny . still can bump slightly once in awhile. light crud was inside tranny pan. haven’t done anything else.

My 06 uplander was a POS since the day i drove it off the lot. Right when my tires left the dealer parking lot check engine went off and i brought it back only to get a estatment for $4000 worth of problems from transmission shift solonoid going bad, egr going bad, steering knuckle sounds like its gonna snap ABS Stabalizer and Traction control all going bad. 130,000 miles this should not be happening Chevy should be ashamed to put these piece of shit death traps on the road. Thanks Chevy for the lemon greatly appreciated… Kinda hope your Gm just has to go bankrupt!!!

I OWN A 2008 CHEVROLET UPLANDER WITH 71000 MILES. THE VEHICLE RUNS GREAT, HOWEVER, PERIODICALLY WHEN TAKING OFF FROM A STANDSTILL I’LL GET A BUMPING ACTION, IT’S ALMOST LIKE BEING BUMPED FROM THE REAR BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. NOT BEING MECHANICAL, I DO HAVE A FEELING IT’S TRANSMISSION SLIPPAGE, ANY IDEAS?

I had one and it was the TPS (throttle position sensor) the computer shifts hard when the engine is revving more than the TPS is reporting to computer. Cheap Fix!

2008 uplander goes well in reverse, slowly in 1st and second…(not up hills anymore) and nothing in drive or 1st. Engine and all else fine. Did smell burning smell one evening before this happened and it was slipping sometimes when needing thrust for years after having some work done. (At rad shop some years ago possibly for air conditioning, not certain.
