The Ford 4F27E is a strengthened 4-speed F4EAT automatic. It now has a four-element torque converter that includes a torque converter clutch and geartrain with two planetary gearsets, a transfer-shaft gear final drive, and a larger differential.

Problem – The Ford Focus 4F27E transmission problems associated with this technical service bulletin include a 2-3 or 2-4 upshift flare, the lack of third and/or fourth gear, and the following transmission diagnostic trouble codes: P0733, P0734, P0751, and/or P0972
Solution – Install a direct clutch repair kit, which will include all the parts necessary to cure these problems

Common Problems with the 4F27E

Slipping and no reverse
4F27E Transmission
Problem – It’s not uncommon for the 4F27E to experience severe slipping and/or no reverse.
Solution – This problem may be caused by a leaking reverse air bleed capsule, which is caused by a deformed check ball inside of the valve body

Noticeable delay in forward gear engagement
4F27E Transmission
Problem – The 4F27E may experience a noticeable delay forward gear engagement when you place the shifter in Drive. It may also experience premature forward clutch failure.
Solution – This problem may be caused by a rough finish inside of the forward clutch drum, which can in-turn damage the forward clutch bonded piston seal.

Torque Converter Issues: The torque converter is a fluid coupling that transfers engine power to the transmission by using transmission fluid to spin a pump that pressurizes the ATF inside the gearbox. A common issue with the Ford Focus 4F27E Transmission is failed stader/pump bushings inside the torque converter, or a faulty torque converter clutch control valve inside the valve body. If either of these parts go bad, you can experience slipping between gears (usually 3 > 4), and a pronounced shudder or shaking at low speeds.

Failed Valve Body Accumulators: One of the most common Ford 4F27E transmission problems is unusually hard shifts. This condition is typically caused by a broken transmission accumulator, which are basically spring-loaded dampers that absorb the extra fluid pressure that instantly builds up when one of the shift solenoids actuates a shift. If the spring goes bad, that instant rush of fluid pressure will cause an unpleasant driving experience, along with internal damage if the actuators aren’t changed.

Another common problem is overheating. This happens when the moving parts inside the transmission are creating more friction heat than the ATF can remove. The most common cause of this condition is towing heavy loads, driving in stop/go traffic, or on mountain roads where the transmission has to shift a lot.
