Slipping, harsh, or erratic shifts from the 2003-2007 Chevy Colorado

Although it was much more usefully sized than the S10 it replaced, it could still have some mighty big transmission problems. Like for example, the torque converter clutch control system, and the torque converter itself could go bad and leave you with a truck that’s very difficult to drive. So let’s take a look at some of the most common Chevy Colorado transmission related problems and see what you can do about them.

What Transmission Do I Have?

Chevy Colorado 4L60E TCC solenoid symptoms

The function of the TCC solenoid is to allow the torque converter clutch to lockup in 4th gear. It does this by sending pressurized transmission fluid to a valve that opens and allows the clutch to apply. The TCC solenoid is controlled by the ECM/engine control module, which sends an electrical signal to the solenoid causing it to open.

According to TSB 08-07-30-008B, many 2003 – 2007 Chevy Colorado drivers may experience a very harsh 1-2 shift as a result of the torque converter clutch, or torque converter itself, not functioning properly. The TCC enable solenoid is the first thing on the list of things to check, as it may be leaking or cracked. The TCC PWM solenoid may also be leaking or cracked.

Other potential problems include the torque converter clutch valve, or a damaged turbine shaft O ring seal. This issue will be accompanied by the diagnostic trouble codes P0804 and/or P1870.

This is potentially a Pandora’s box of problems, that you could be chasing down one at a time. And that can cost you money. Big money.
