Nissan Rogue Transmission Problems & Overview | RE0F10A CVT

The Rogue was the first compact CUV to be fitted with a CVT transmission, so it’s no surprise that 2nd gen models got a revised ‘Xtronic’ CVT with a dedicated Sport Mode. Does something seem wrong with your Rogue? Let’s look at some of the most common Nissan Rogue transmission problems, and see what you can do to get your car back on the road.

Nissan Rogue CVT Warranty Extension

To provide its customers with additional assurance regarding their overall cost of ownership, Nissan doubled the warranty period for the CVT transmission in the 2008-2010 Nissan Rogue. The existing powertrain warranty coverage of 5 years/60,000 miles was extended at no cost, for CVT repairs, replacements or related towing, up to 10 years/120,000 miles (whichever comes first).

This extension required no action on the customer’s part. The remainder of the powertrain warranty coverage for components other than the transmission remains unchanged, at 5 years/60,000 miles, and the basic warranty coverage also remains unchanged. Nissan Rogue Recalls

No transmission-related recalls.

Nissan Rogue Technical Service Bulletins (TSB)

2015 Rogue – TSB PC346
Problem – Nissan is voluntarily replacing torque converters in certain 2015 Rogue’s.
Solution – For more information, contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261. Refer to campaign id; PC346

TSB NTB13-079d – Reduced performance due to CVT fluid temperature protection logic – RE0F10A CVT transmission

*Note: These RE0F10A transmission problems apply to several vehicles. The TSB relating to that vehicle will be listed next to its name.

2007 – 2012 Nissan Altima 4cyl – TSB NTB13-079d
2007 – 2012 Nissan Sentra – TSB NTB13-095c
2008 – 2013 Nissan Rogue – TSB NTB14-002d
2014 – 2015 Nissan Rogue Select – TSB NTB12-057c

Problem – The reduced performance is due to the CVT fail-safe mode, which will reduce the vehicle speed to protect the transmission from further damage. This will happen after high RPM (4000+) and/or high-speed driving (65 mph/104.6 km/h) for 1-1.5 hours or more.

Solution – If the technician determines that the transmission has not been overfilled/the correct transmission fluid is used, and the coolant concentration is not greater than 50%, they will use the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system to determine if the conditions were present to damage the transmission. If the conditions were moderate, the RE0F10A valve body will need to be replaced, and an external CVT fluid cooler installed. If the conditions were more severe, then the transmission itself will need to be replaced.

TSB NTB09-148A – Valve body failure
2007-2008 Altima – 2007-2008 Rogue – 2007-2008 Sentra
Problem – Cars equipped with the CVT transmission may have the following trouble codes stored in the TCM: P0840. P0845, P0744, P1777
Solution – The Control Valve Assembly will have to be replaced.

Common Nissan Rogue Transmission Problems

Vehicle will not move forward when the shifter is placed in the Drive position – RE0F10A CVT transmission
Problem – After placing the vehicle in Drive, it may refuse to move as if the transmission is slipping or cannot engage forward gear.
Solution – The problem could be as simple as low CVT fluid or a failed speed sensor. However it can also be failed transmission pump or forward clutch.

Can I drive with a transmission problem?

If your Nissan Rogue can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.

How often does a Nissan Rogue transmission need to be replaced?

The overall lifespan of a Nissan Rogue transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation (including the radiator issue that plagued the Nissan RE5R05A in the Pathfinder, Armada, Titan, Frontier and Xterra), along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the Nissan Rogue transmissions last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.

How are Nissan Rogue transmission issues diagnosed?

It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your Nissan Rogue transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.

How is a Nissan Rogue transmission replaced?

In order to replace your Nissan Rogue transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed.

Recommendations for Nissan Rogue transmission issues?

To save time and get back on the road faster, have your 17-digit truck VIN# handy and you can get an online quote for a reman Nissan Rogue transmission here, then find a local shop using our Find a Shop guide to install it for you.

How to Solve Nissan Rogue Transmission Problems

Solution A: Buy a Used Nissan Rogue Transmission

The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.

Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Nissan Rogue Transmission

Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.

Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Nissan Rogue Transmission

Need a replacement transmission? Get an estimate for replacement transmissions and local installation. Look up your transmission model by vehicle make and model.

What Transmission Do I Have?

Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

I had a 2008 Nissan Titan Truck and my transmission went out at 40,000 miles. Poorly built transmissions. I will never buy another Nissan vehicle in my life. I also bought a 2011 Nissan Rogue Vehicle and the transmission went out at 87,000 miles, my daughter bought a 2014 Nissan Altima and her transmission went out at 76,000 miles.

I HAVE LEASED A NISSAN ROGUE 2019 A MONTH AGO, THE CAR SUDDENLY SLOWED DOWN AND STOPED ACCELERATION WHILE I WAS EXITING FROM FREEWAY AND ALL THE DANGER SIGNS APPEARED ON THE FRONT PANEL WITH WARNING ” MANUFACTURE MALFUNCTION, FOLLOW THE MANUAL”. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO SERVICE CENTER AND THEY GAVE ME THE CAR BACK AFTER 2 DAYS AND SAID EVERYTHING IS CORRECTED. ON THE NEXT DAY IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON THE STREET, LUCKILY THE DRIVER BEHIND ME DIDNT HIT ME BY SUDDEN BREAK. I HAVE REPORTED TO THE DEALERSHIP/MANAGER, AND TO THE NISSAN USA CUSTOMER DEPT THEY SAID THERE IS WARRANTY TO REPAIR. THIS IS REALLY UNSAFE TO DRIVE THIS CAR. IF SLOWS DOWN ON THE STREET ANY TIME CAN MAKE ACCIDENT. I ASKED FOR REPLACEMENT OR REIMBURSEMENT OF MONEY BUT NISSAN USA AND DEALERSHIP DIDN’T AGREE. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE.

If they can’t fix it after four times it is considered a lemon. Get a lawyer that deals with lemons. They will have to pay your lawyer fees. Totally worth it.

This has happened to me with my last two Nissans. (2011 Sentra and 2013 Rogue) I’m done with Nissans. It is so scary driving especially on the interstate with a large Semi behind you at between 70 and 80 MPH.

Bought new 2018 Rogue Midnight SV in Aug 2018 with 7 miles on it and told the salesperson it was vibrating during a test drive, which made me think it was the tranny. I told him I would give it a couple of weeks and see if it clears up. At 800 miles, going 30 miles an hour the tranny locked up and jerked to a stop. Lucky, my my wasn’t driving, as I bought the car for cash for her. It happened again a few days later. Now, I won’t let her drive it.

Thanks Liz! This should be posted on some of the you tube videos relating to Nissan Rogue woes!…
Everyone, I went for another recall related to throttle risk on my Rogue in early 2017 and Nissan never mentioned this! Even at that time I CVT was noisy/whining. Now at 119500 jerking between what I deem to be around 1st and 2nd gear. I checked fluid and looks fine but not sure ever flushed. *Also read Nissan ext CVT wtty to 120K.

I have a 2011 Nissan Rogue and have changed the transmission fluid at the recommended mileage. I have 72,000 miles on it and it has just started slipping while trying to accelerate. I too am trying to decide whether to ditch now and get a car payment or contact Nissan for repair. I bought a 80,000 mile warranty on the CVT, but have heard they do not honor the warranty. When I had the oil changed the Nissan service advisor stated they are seeing LOTS of CVT issues with the hot weather.

I have a 2011 Nissan Rogue with a transmission problem base on the diagnostic test I’m at 143,000 miles and im waiting to see if my warranty company will fix it .I was told by the Nissan dealership if they don’t cover the cost I’m looking at $4600 if I do decide to fix it on my own .I will be finish paying off for this car in August and I’m really unsure as to if I want to continue with this problem or if I even want a new car payment . My car doesn’t accelerates and only goes up to 60 once I approach 80 it jerks as if I’m shifting gears and even comes to a point where it’s also shut off . I’m afraid to continue to drive because I can damage more pieces in the transmission which can add up to an even bigger bill.

I have a 2011 as well. It was doing the same issues that you described above. I stopped driving it to not cause more problems. With 199,000 miles I decided to get a new transmission since I own the car. I paid 2800 through a family mechanic. That was the only way it was worth it for me. Good luck

Same issue with my 2015 Rouge. At 60,000 miles a new transmission has to go in! Thank God I purchased the extended warranty because it’s all covered. I’ve had other issues with this Rouge. First and last one. Mazda here I come!

My new ( 10 miles) Nissan Rogue SV Midnight version had a vibration that would come and go when I bought it. I told the salesperson I would wait a week or so. Then at 800 miles, the CVT tranny just locked up at about thirty twice in about four days. I am afraid to let my wife drive it; although I bought it for her. I paid cash and feel I may have bought a Lemon. We’ll see. I may have to give it back and run away …

We leased a brand new Nissan Rogue 18 silver with 250 miles delivered. Looked great. Took it on a trip across country, and at 2700 miles transmission stopped. Was driving on a church parking lot at 20mph it stopped. People wondered why I was stopped, but the transmission did not engage at all, but the engine was running. Towed the car to a local Nissan dealer, and they tried with technicians to figure out the problem. They could not fix it, and replaced the transmission. I wonder about this CVT transmission.

I had 2 Nissan rogues and i drove the first one (2011 ) over 245,000 miles , no issues ..my trick it was simple, I had the 30 k and 60 k tune ups done on the CVT .Also I would shift to neutral gear on down hill , That relieves the tension on the transmission and avoid enlarging the steel belt …I requires getting used to it , but it works great ! CVT trans weakness is the internal steel belt .. so the neutral shifting avoids the problem !

Yes, especially when driving at a steep angle. Transmission slips and sounds as if falling out, then rolls backward and will not engage to drive forward. If you put the car in park then turn off engine and restart, it will engage. Very scary!

My 2013 Rogue had these same problems, driving on the highway for a few hours and lost acceleration power. When slowing down a bit it got better, and after refueling started out ok again. Same thing happened after another 45 min. My hometown mechanic & Nissan dealer says the transmission needs to be replaced, mileage is at 94,000.

Best advice is don’t buy a Nissan, especially not a CVT transmission. Contacted Nissan to see if they would be willing to help us out a bit with the large cost of repair, but they won’t do a thing. Never buying a Nissan again.

I have a 2016 Nissan Rogue, 4 cyl . The car was towed on 6/9/18 to Quirk Nissan on the Southeastern Artery.

I was in park, I turned my car on, applied the brake to back up, my suv would not shift. Suddenly, I was holding the entire shift in my hand the spring inside went flying out from the shift holder along with a small plastic piece, They either came flying out from the holder on the shift, I feel that they did. As the shift had come right up and off the gear box. Mean time my car is running and the key is stuck in position and I could not get it out of the column. Nor could the AAA tow truck driver. I could not shift or shut the car off, or remove the key. Nor could the AAA driver. The tow company had to put my Rogue [ 2016 ] with less than 7000 miles on it, and tow it from 996 East Street, Apt. 1, Walpole to Quirk Nissan in Quincy, all the time my car is running for the 1/2 hr drive, and it is stuck in park as the transmission shift and part were completely off and in my passenger seats. I never got any recall of problems. But this could have been very serious on a highway. I do not know if I even have breaks. Please follow up on this, and with Quirk Nissan, Quincy, Ma. I trust them, that is why I have my car there, despite my paying $ 65.00 for the tow. Repair to me ? And getting back when the SUV is ready. I should not have to pay for any repair, it just fell apart in my hand, and locked the key in place. The tow company, AAA, and the delership can verify.

2012 Rogue SL bought at 3,000 miles has been good until recently (regularly maintained) but now transmission(130,000+)… …..loses acceleration after long drives such as 1hr (it’s ok if I stay at 60); can’t pick up speed on highway then Only accelerates after a long delay if I get to a complete stop…heard about transmission issues with Nissans so got a transmission flush/filter and hoping that helps… so far so good

Hi I have the exact same Rogue and mileage as you have
I was wondering did the trans flush and filter change work
for you. I am thinking about doing the same thing but I don’t
want to create more problems as some people have had after
changing fluid. Mine runs fine ,not slipping or safe mode warnings
or anything like that but it does make a very loud whining noise when
I get between 40 and 50 mph. If you let me know how you made
out that would be great. Thanks a lot

I had the same problem 4 times on long trips. After the 1st trip, took it in to my mechanic & they did a diagnostic on it, but couldn’t find a problem. They said I needed to bring it in when I was having the problem, but it would only do it on trips. Took it to a Nissan dealership last week & they said I need a new transmission. I have 65K miles. They have submitted paperwork to Nissan Headquarters to see if they’ll pay for a new one which with a cooler would cost $4,750. I’m waiting to find out. Rogue is a 2012.

My 2015 Nissan Rogue Select is losing acceleration intermittently. I spoke with Nissan yesterday and the agent stated that my vehicle is not covered under the 2015 Service Campaign because it wasn’t built in the specific factory. Regardless, my vehicle is having the exact same issues as those that were replaced under the campaign. If Nissan knows this is an issue in some vehicles, why not correct the issue in all vehicles that show up with the same compliant? I have always owned a Nissan. This will be my last. From the dealership mechanic asking me if I even know what a torque converter is (probably because I’m a woman) to the corporate office ignoring my many complaints with the “it wasn’t built in the same factory” excuse, I will never buy another Nissan product. They would rather an accident occur and get sued than to accept that there ARE faulty vehicles out there built with crappy parts.

I bought my 2013 Nissan rogue brand new. It is now just hitting 61k, and I have been experiencing the same exact problem- sudden loss of acceleration on highway. I am a single mother and have a permanent disability, with mobiIity issues. And I have a vehicle that is a serious risk to mine and my child’s safety. I have taken the car to my local nissan dealerships several times and they have not been able to detect the problem when diagnosing. A few weeks ago, it happened once again, and when I finally (with great stress and fear) I made it home, I realized my cigarette lighter port stopped working, the alarm was not sounding when locking doors, and the sunroof was not sliding open continuously (it opens aprox 2 inches at a time, then I have to press the button to slide 2 inches again, repeat till it finally closes). I took the car in to the dealership, they ran diagnostics, and came back with “the alternator is gone so that is why the functions are not working”. They gave me an estimate of $968 CAD to replace it. The loss of acceleration issue wasnt even addressed, in fact once again I was told diagnostics didnt detect an issue. I was so shocked, I said I would have to think about it. So I paid the $130 diagnostic fees and left. I took the car in to an independent mechanic who also ran diagnostics, and found nothing wrong with alternator. But they suggested I take car in to electrical place in case there was some short somewhere that may be causing the functions that weren’t working. I took it to their recommended place and they found a blown fuse as the cause of the cigarette lighter port not working and reprogramming the key fob to work again. Sunroof- they said there is a small crack in sensor and that’s why it’s not opening/closing smoothly (note- I’ve only used the sunroof half a dozen times in the cars entire life so dont know how that could have happened). I didnt get sunroof fixed as they said it would be very expensive.
In November 2017 I had the same loss of acceleration while on a long drive. I brought it back to my local Nissan dealership, left the car there for over 2 hours, and when I returned I was told they had replaced some part but there would be no charge to me because they had tried calling me and I hadn’t answered. I thanked them and left with my car. Couple days later I realized I had forgotten to ask for the service record. I called to request a copy via email. The service dept asked me for my tel no. then asked me who had serviced my car. I gave them the name and they transferred me to the tech directly. He promised he would send it out later that day. I never recieved it. For the next few weeks I continued to call and I would keep getting transferred to the same tech who would continue to promise me he would take care of it that day. Within that time my mother got sick and hospitalized, and soon after I also got very Ill for couple months and this whole service record issue slipped my mind.
After my most recent episode and visit to the same dealership, I once again called to ask for all of the service records. They sent me all the records except for the one I had been asking for. And when I asked about it they told me they had no record of it. They kept my car for over 2 hours, did some repair work but they have no record of it??? I wrote to the headoffice about my transmission issue and the service record issue, and cc’d the dealership, and got a very generic letter referring me back to my “preferred Nissan dealership” to figure out the issue. They didnt even acknowledge the missing service record issue, nor did the dealership themselves try to reach out. I’m so disappointed with this vehicle in general. The interior seats cloth started wearing within a year, the exterior already rusting, I’ve already replaced the battery, new tires within 2 years. I’ve owned 4 Toyota corollas prior to this, and never ever experienced any such issues, as they are amazing cars. I needed an SUV as it’s easier for me to get in and out of it due to my disability. If Nissan doesn’t do something about this, I would never buy Nissan again.

The CVT is an idea that has come and gone several times through auto history. Originally tried in cars in 1958. The CVT’s best application has been in motorcycles. The problem has always been the greater weight of passenger cars. Google DAF and the CVT transmission, to research the device. It will always be doomed to failure in heavier cars. Don’t buy a car with a CVT.
