Dodge Ram Van with P1740 DTC and torque converter or overdrive performance

According to the technical service bulletin TSB 21-11-00, the 2000 – 2001 Dodge Ram Van equipped with the 46RE transmission experience torque converter clutch/TCC where the clutch temporarily disengages. There may also be overdrive solenoid performance issues. These issues are most often accompanied by the diagnostic trouble code/DTC P1740.

What Transmission Do I Have?

This is a rather interesting problem because it could be caused by the valve body pressure boost valve cover plate. Located on top of the valve body, this bit of metal may need a larger orifice hole in order to better distribute hydraulic pressure.

However, if certain conditions are not met for this repair, it may not be the fault of the pressure booster valve cover plate. In which case, other problems should be considered like worn input shaft seals, a missing pump lock up circuit check ball, a worn converter hub, input shaft, reaction shaft and/or pump rotor. A new torque converter and front pump may also be a simpler solution.
