I had minimum slippage in my 04 Monte Carlo SS 3.8L series II, I had a code of P1870 and was told BEFORE the tear down I needed a rebuilt tranny. I have close to 300K but I’m not a hard driver. They kept my car for 12 days! I was also told by my mechanic they never pulled my tranny. The bolts do not look as if they have been removed at all. I’ve caught them telling conflicting stories, saying they rebuilt it there at the shop, they sent it out to be rebuilt and a lot more. I think they didn’t do anything major because I’m getting a hard shift in reverse. Now if they rebuilt my transmission does that include looking at the gears also? I really feel I was taken because I was financed and it didn’t cost a penny less than what I was financed for! And I’m starting to see a transmission leak and I got this done a couple weeks ago. What should I do?

Free estimate to your email.First, get your car up on a lift, take a digital camera and document everything you have mentioned here. Pay close attention to the transmission bolts. If they do not look like they have been moved and the dirt or grime around them looks undisturbed then you, like as not, have a major problem with the transmission shop. Be sure, also, to redocument their statements. Make sure you talk with all of the people in the shop with whom you had conversations about the transmission. Try to get their comments on audio, of possible. Never try, though, to record a person without his or her permission because you can get in boat-loads of trouble if you do.
After you have documented the transmission condition on the lift and after you have talked with the tranny shop about the transmission, again, you must contact your state’s Consumer Affairs Office or the state Attorney General’s Office and file a complaint against the shop because it looks like there is more than a bit of transmission hocus-pokus going on.
