I am posting this here on behalf of commenter hsquared.

Hello, about 4 months ago, I had a transmission rebuild from a local shop. The problems I was having prior to the rebuild was that my Ford Ranger XLT Flex Fuel truck would start off going all the way past 3000 RPM before shifting, and it would shift hard then go into OD/overdrive. Seems like it was missing 2nd and getting stuck in 3rd. So I went to a couple of transmission shops and got some quotes. The one I chose quoted me at $1800 while the competitor quoted me at $2500.

After the work was done, the truck was running fine for a month. But then all of a sudden, the same problems started again. I took the truck back to the shop. (In between the time the problems started again, I did have some work done in which my brother who’s mechanically inclined did for me. We replaced the radiator and both hoses and the radiator fluid.) The shop asked me if I had some work done since the truck’s transmission was replaced, and I told them yes, as they saw, the radiator and hoses were replaced. The shop’s front desk person told me that when a radiator is replaced, there are other lines connected with it, including lines from the transmission. So when all that is done, the transmission fluid needs to be checked because when disconnecting those lines, fluid will be lost. So my transmission fluid was low. They took care of the problem. BUT another 3 weeks later, the same problems I had before the rebuild started again.

This time I took the truck back and had them do a test drive with me. They gave me a loaner vehicle and repaired it again. When I came to get my truck, as soon as I left the shop, and drove to work, the problems started AGAIN. Right after I left the shop. I don’t know what to think. I am embarrassed to tell my friends, because most people don’t trust mechanics and make fun of the prices they charge. In turn, I get made fun of. But what am I to do. I am NOT mechanically inclined and I don’t know the first thing about doing repairs myself. So I get made fun of. I don’t know what to do.
