I am posting this here for Rick who submitted it using the comment form.

Hey I have a 2003 Chevy Impala Ls 3.8 V6 it has 129k miles on it and drives good but as soon as I got it I’ve been having problems. The RPM meter goes all the way up to 2/3 without pressing the gas and when I drive off it takes a while to get to 20mph than normal. I took it to 2 autoshops in NY and they both gave me a price range for $1100 and $1200. My tranny fluid burns and starts to smoke after a while. I took it to Autozone and the computer read that the 2nd and 3rd gear needed to be fixed. Should I get a rebuild or brand new tranny. I’m bringing the car to Lincoln Tech for free labor I just need to know the best price for transmissions.

Need a replacement transmission? Quality transmissions are hard to find. Free estimate to your email.

    Hi Admin,
Finding and correcting the cause of the fluid overheating issue should take precedence in this case. If fluid cooler lines are blocked, it will make no difference to whether a rebuilt or new transmission is fitted, because the fluid overheating issue will destroy either as well.

However, I would recommend a new transmission as opposed to a rebuilt unit, if by “rebuild” Rick means rebuilding his existing unit. Overheated fluid can literally fuse internal parts together, which means that just about everything in the transmission has to be replaced to avoid any issues in the future, which makes fitting a new transmission the better option from a reliabilty perspective.

The RPM issue is more likely to be related to engine management system malfunctions than to the transmission, but there is not enough information to venture a diagnosis on this issue.

    Hope this helps.
