Can I drive with a transmission problem?

If your Dodge Sprinter 2500 can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.

How often does a Dodge Sprinter 2500 transmission need to be replaced?

The overall lifespan of a Dodge Sprinter 2500 transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the Dodge Sprinter 2500 transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.

How are Dodge Sprinter 2500 transmission issues diagnosed?

It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your Dodge Sprinter 2500 transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.

How is a Dodge Sprinter 2500 transmission replaced?

In order to replace your Dodge Sprinter 2500 transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed.

How to Solve Dodge Sprinter 2500 Transmission Problems

Solution A: Buy a Used Dodge Sprinter 2500 Transmission

The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.

Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Dodge Sprinter 2500 Transmission

Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.

Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Dodge Sprinter 2500 Transmission

Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

Seems to be leaking no dip stick I put about half a quarter in a week rpm seems a bit high at 2 when driving 50 mph

2011 sprinter 2500 extended – experiencing loss of throttle response, rough idle/stalling, and extremely slow acceleration. Also, if I park it in a rut or on a hill, and then try to start from a dead stop, it will sometimes not even move (pedal to the metal and nothing) until someone literally pushes it to start …still seems to drive amazing on the highway

Originally thought it was the torque converter, took it to Mercedes and couldn’t find an issue. The only code I’ve received refers to a failing IAC Valve. Taken it to three other mechanics since and still no definitive answers. Anybody know what’s happening!?

I have had 2 sprinters and both of them have had transmission issues (I think). I’ll be driving and there is a random heavy vibration, and the RPMs jump up and down. There are more common times that it happens, like going up hill or at a certain speed, but it has and can happen at anytime on any surface. Unfortunately I’m one of those illogical people who thought, hey it’s still moving. I’ll get it fixed next month. Today it did not want to shift into gear. I know transmission replacement and repair is painfully expensive. How much does it normally cost in labor to switch transmissions? Is there a trustworthy place you would recommend to order a rebuilt transmission and have it shipped to me?

I was parked at a light and drive and then the light changed and stepped on the gas to drive but my 2006 Dodge sprinter 2500 van would not go forward I turned the key off and turned it on again put it in drive and it was working for a little bit just enough for me to be able to get over to the side of the road, then it died again and when I would push the gas the engine would just rev up even though the car was in drive. It seems when I would turn the truck off and on it would work for a tiny bit but then go back to the same condition it was in. I took it to a auto body shop they said it was low on fluid and there was a leak on the pan they filled it up and tested it worked for probably two months and then did the same thing again. That day it was raining outside pretty heavily. Since then it’s been parked in my driveway until last week I started to drive it around a little bit not sure if it would die on me so I kept it just around the house and it seems like everything worked fine I’m extremely confused on what’s wrong or if the causes from the rain. Can you help?

Hello! Did you ever figure out what was wrong? My van (also a 2006 dodge sprinter. 170k miles) just started doing the same exact thing! After alot of research I found out my 13 pin connector plug in the transmission was leaking fluid, so I changed that. I also cleaned all four of the wheel speed sensors. Took it out for a drive and after 25 miles it was still running. Still not sure if the connector or the speed sensors were the problem so planning on taking it for a longer drive. Just wondering if you ever found your problem.

Check/ add atf. If converter runs dry, it would mimic your truck’s symptoms.

My sprinter sometimes vibrates like im driving over a sleeper lane when going through 23mph and sometimes at 33mph. Does that sound like it is the torque converter? The van has 225k miles on it. Does it need to be addressed right away?
